YCDSB Director of Education Domenic Scuglia Announces Retirement After Outstanding Teaching Career

York Catholic District School Board Director of Education Domenic Scuglia will retire after a 41-year career promoting equity, excellence and faith in two Canadian provinces.

“The Board of Trustees is grateful for Domenic Scuglia’s many contributions to the YCDSB, in particular for creating stability in our school board during the difficult days near the end of the pandemic,” said Chair of the Board Elizabeth Crowe. “Dom’s commitment to reconciliation with Indigenous peoples was inspiring and it will be one of his lasting legacies in this board.”

Starting his career in 1982 as a physical education teacher, Mr. Scuglia later served as Vice Principal at Father Michael McGivney Catholic Academy in Markham and Holy Cross CA in Woodbridge. He was later appointed Principal of St. Joan of Arc Catholic High School in Maple and the founding Principal of St. Maximillian Kolbe CHS in Aurora.

After spending his career at the YCDSB, Mr. Scuglia moved to Regina Catholic School Division, where he was the Director of Education from May 2016 to June 2021. In July 2021, Mr. Scuglia returned to the YCDSB to serve as Director of Education.

“It has been a joy and honour to be part of the YCDSB for 40 years,” said Domenic Scuglia. “It was a difficult decision to start a new phase in my life, but I know that we have the right people in place to ensure that the YCDSB remains the top school board in Ontario for years to come.”

Before becoming Director of Education, in addition to his teaching and administrative duties, Mr. Scuglia furthered the spread of rugby in this province by volunteering as the Director of Junior Rugby and later the President of Rugby Ontario.

“Dom has an amazing ability to connect with people, as is seen in the excitement that fills every school when he visits,” said Chair Crowe.

Mr. Scuglia is known for his leadership, consensus-building and, particularly, his love of students.

John De Faveri will serve as the YCDSB’s Interim Director of Education. Mr. De Faveri has been a Superintendent of Education at the York Catholic District School Board and Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board. He was Director of Education for the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board for four years. Mr. De Faveri has held executive positions with the Georgina Trades Training Inc., a not-for-profit organization that provides training opportunities to those in that community.

“I am extremely grateful for the opportunity that the Trustees at YCDSB have given to me to once again serve the York Catholic community,” said John De Faveri. “It feels great to return to where my career began.”

The York Catholic District School Board supports and inspires approximately 50,000 students and their families through an innovative Catholic education curriculum rooted in Gospel values. More than 5,000 dedicated staff are committed to building strong faith-filled communities of lifelong learners, guided by commitments to student achievement, equity and inclusion, and well-being.
